Enakshi reviews a film, Stargirl, differently. She draws life lessons from the girl who knew the importance of being herself. An exclusive for Different Truths.

Just yesterday, I watched a Disney film titled, Stargirl. Now, if you haven’t seen it yet, I wouldn’t suggest you watch it because it is quite slow and might feel drab. But if you are looking for something didactic, this movie is a good choice. The story is about a girl named Susan, who likes to call herself as Stargirl because she believes that we all are made up of stardust. The story explores the silent joy that one can experience if one is aware of self and takes pride in being what they really are. Stargirl is different from the others in many ways- in the way she dresses, in the way she’s always up to help, in the way how she is always spirited and in the way how she believes that real things take their own time.

After watching that movie, one thing that I realised was that all of us are different in our own ways. The only problem is that we are so consumed by work that we forget to take a pause and process. How many of us have seen a flower grow? I bet we haven’t. Because if we take time to observe that tiny seed sprout from the soil and grow tall, ready to embrace a new world, we would become slow. We would learn the meaning of life. We would realize that for the flower to become beautiful, the gradual process of growth is imperative. We would learn that real things take time. We would lose time. Can we afford to lose time and learn so many new things at the same time?

Every slow process leads to a better outcome. There are so many books that

encourage the readers to identify their purpose so that the will to go on will help them enjoy every passing second. But do we actually have the time to read and then implement all those suggestions in our fast and fleeting life? It is easy for all of us to get confused when we are moving so fast and assume that we are doing the right thing when we aren’t. Realisation comes with time- the time that we do not give ourselves. Each individual requires time to figure out the way he/ she works. Succumbing to the circumstances in search of tangible pleasures of life is not always the wisest decision. Call it our naivety or our arrogance, we believe that rest does not guarantee success. But trust me, rest will always help you rejuvenate and then work with fresh zest. Rest will ensure that the baggage from the previous experience has been dropped off. Rest will help you reset your mind and prepare it for the new challenges.

Similarly, we do not ever think about taking a step back and analysing our life. Even though we earn to live a comfortable life, we end up being caught in the whirlpool of deadlines, timelines and other responsibilities. The only way out is to reflect and introspect, do what makes us unique and invest time in an activity that will enhance our persona and not only our lifestyle.

Our life is short and to be able to make the most of the time we have on our hands, it is important to festoon the mind with memories that remind us who we really are. It might be possible to get all things done at our beck and call but the only thing that others cannot do for us is figuring out who we are.

So next time, when you decide to do something, pause and do nothing because people aren’t happy when they win. They win because they are happy (to quote Stargirl).
