Merry Melange

Emma was working as a marketing manager in a company. She was one of the best employees. She always met the targets and benefited the company to generate revenue. From last year, many changes happened politically and economically. It affected the business which impacted the finances of the company.

That day she had a meeting with the HR manager and she told her that the company will not be able to survive longer if they do not take action now. The HR manager said that the company has decided to cut the staff numbers. Emma was shocked to hear this. She had an idea that something would happen. But I was not sure that it would happen so soon.

The manager said that you have seen many ups and downsides of this company. You have been working for almost a decade. You are one of the senior most and ethical employees. This is a difficult time for the management to make tough decisions. Because it takes courage to take such decisions for their employees. Particularly those who have given their time, honesty, and hard work to the company.

This is a difficult time for the management to make tough decisions.

Downsizing the Company

The manager also mentioned that it’s been almost six months that we have not generated any revenue. For the last two months, the company is not able to pay the bills. So, management has decided to reduce half of the employees. You are the first one with whom I am having this meeting. This meeting to inform you that your position will be redundant. And the following week will be your last week.

Emma was astounded hearing this news.

Emma was astounded hearing this news. It seemed that the earth slipped from beneath her feet. She was just blank and at the same time her mind filled with many questions. What would happen now? What will I do? How the bills would be paid, rents, the list was long.  Her heart was sinking.

She controlled herself from a breakdown. How could this happen to me?  I spent almost 10 years here. The manager replied, “I can understand your emotions but the company financially is in a terrible situation. We are assuming that the company will not run longer even after cutting down with the staff.”

Her mind was filled with sad thoughts. She walked out of the office with a heavy heart.

She looked at the clock. It was already 5 pm. She took her bag, switched off the light of her room, and locked it. Her mind was filled with sad thoughts. She walked out of the office with a heavy heart.

Stressed and Shattered

As she stepped out from the office her tears rolled down. In her heart she was saying, “Oh god what will happen now?” She was walking down the street with unstoppable tears. The whole time, way back home, she was not able to hold herself up. She was stressed and shattered.

And questioned why this had happened? PC: Anumita C Roy

She woke up in the middle of every night. And questioned why this had happened?

She woke up in the middle of every night. And questioned why this had happened? She was not able to accept that she had lost her job. Her nine-to-five routine was a part of her life. It seemed that a major chunk had gone from her accustomed life.

She actively started to look for a new job. She applied for many jobs and gave a few interviews too. But she had not succeeded. Though she was hopeful that she would get a job soon, she was in turmoil.

Thoughts crowded her mind and upset her. Everything was going smoothly. She never thought that something like this could happen to her. She was one of the extraordinary employees.

A Good Reason

One day, she was watching a TV show and a dialogue, “Whatever happens that happens for a reason” made her think about her current situation. She thought about the time when she woke up early and caught the bus for her work. She returned home with little energy to spend time with her kids.

Now she was at home and no rush to wake up early and no running after buses either. She felt that this is an opportunity which gave her time to be with her kids. Well, until she got a new job.  This changed her way of thinking. She started doing everything that she was unable to do when she was working.

She started to enjoy being at home. Emma included yoga and jogging as part of her routine. She also started to learn and enhance her baking skills. Her kids loved cake and cupcakes. She explored many things which she never got a chance to do earlier because of time constraints.

Positive and Happy

She turned this difficult time into a positive and happy time by looking into the best side of it. Financially, the time was hard but not impossible. She realised that when you were at home then you could reduce many extra expenses. She trusted time. She knew the difficult time would not stay forever.

Every phase of life had its good and bad.

She was enjoying every bit with her family and simultaneously was applying for jobs. Every phase of life had its good and bad. But one should look into the positive side of everything to live life happily.

Indeed life is beautiful. Life is like a season. Every season brings us different experiences. Life too has many phases: joy, sorrow, anger, love, frustration, success, and failure.

These give us lessons and experiences. Age doesn’t make us mature but life experiences do.

After six months, she got a new job. And everything fell into place.

After six months, she got a new job. And everything fell into place. Her familiar office routine began. Then, her finances got better. But there were more responsibilities. It meant less time for the family.

We must understand and accept that we can’t get everything. We lose some to gain some.
