An evocative poem of the days gone by, by Mitra, exclusively for Different Truths.

I don’t know if the cuckoo
sings there anymore or the
afternoon is still serene
That was years back when
I was a child and didn’t let
reason interferes with innocence
When I still saw shapes in clouds
and thought my paper boat
would float to the sea

I don’t know if I can still hear
the flute played in those
green pastures but its melody
is still fresh in my mind
Those were the days when I
waited for the music to surround
me in waves of dream

I don’t know if I can find the
mango trees still blossoming
in the summer breeze
Those were the days when
I liked mangoes or trees and
had summer holidays

I don’t know if the fountain
has dried and the stream
doesn’t flow anymore
Those were the days when
the ripples of water glittered
and I sat by it to read poetry
and pen down some

Then there came a time when
time started moving fast and
I had to leave the city with a
promise to return
I don’t know if I will ever go back
there but If I do, I want the child
in me to find some part of that
memory, still alive
