Soumya looks back in glee on the last day at work after 37 years, exclusively for Different Truths.

Today will be my last day in the insurance industry after thirty-seven mostly fun years spread over three metros in three tariff zones and two companies.

I had joined a PSU insurer straight from college within days of my final exams getting over, having cleared the entrance competitive exams and interviews, while still a student of Delhi University, living in a hostel.

I started working in a dingy old building with high ceilings, slow ceiling fans and dusty files, on the border between the new and old worlds as represented in Delhi by Asaf Ali Road, which runs along the walls of the walled city of Shahjahanabad. The only bright spot in the office was a petite bibliophile accounts officer, who later became my spouse.

Thirty-two of those were spent in the trenches selling and leading teams. The first two and last three were spent trying to figure out where I am. The boardroom battles continued to leave me baffled.

I have accumulated a few things along the way, which hopefully will stay with me.

I have accumulated a few things along the way, which hopefully will stay with me. A provident fund, a few friends, lots of love and affection, plenty of amusing memories and a spouse, especially the last and the first.

I am hanging up my boots from another grand old building in Asaf Ali Road, close to the office where I started my career. Incidentally, I started sitting in the same board room where I had been interviewed.

When I returned to Delhi a few years earlier and commented on life coming a full circle, my spouse warned me that everything should not be like the first time around.

Perhaps some of you will remain in touch with me outside the professional sphere. My phone number will be the same.

I will be living in Salt Lake, Kolkata, a gentleman at leisure.

Au revoir!
