Service to others is the rent you pay for your room on the Earth. I think this is true, for the real purpose of our existence cannot just be to live an aimless life. Since we all are a part of a big community, living a life in harmony and peace is our motto. To accomplish this motto, many individuals risk their life or well-being but then several others do not even flinch at the thought of mercy. Whether it is the army officers giving up their lives at the border, the young PhD scholars who are toiling day and night trying to successfully carry out the research and development in the fight against Corona, the celebrities like Sonu Sood and Ajay Devgan or a commercial pilot like Deepak Sathe, students of various schools contributing to a greater cause, Dr Kafeel Khan from Uttar Pradesh, all these people are no less than the messiahs, who came to the rescue of our people in the turbulent times.

The times are tough yet the spirit so resilient.
The situations are ever so transilient.
With no aid in sight, one might lose the way.
But your presence around often saves the day.
Without a care about your life, family or desire
You risk life and limb by jumping into the blazing fire!
People at home don’t hold you back,
They just wish that life cuts you some slack.
As darkness descends and calls you out to fight
You never wince but always stay with what is right.
We need more people you,
We need to become like you,
The saviours, the selfless and the men-at-arms,
Who listens to the silent clarion call ignoring other alarms!
If you are not aware of who these people are, then you should change the news
channel that you regularly watch. These are the right people who find you at the right moment. They are not summoned nor informed. They just need a sign to know their moment of clarity and then they get down to business, a business that involves life and not money. Dr Kafeel Khan, a doctor at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur, came into the news when he voluntarily paid for the oxygen supply in the hospital and saved the lives of many. The hospital’s oxygen supply was cut owing to non-payment of dues and because of this, several patients had lost their life. Dr Kafeel took the matters in his own hands by paying for the oxygen cylinders when the piped supply was cut. The result you might ask? Three days after his act of kindness, he was removed as the nodal officer in charge of the encephalitis ward on the charges of the negligence of duty and for carrying out private practice.
Sonu Sood is one such messiah. Helping more than a thousand migrant workers, who didn’t have food or water or proper shelter, Sood made it possible for them to go back home by arranging transport and providing food and water during the journey.
Who doesn’t know about Sood’s Ghar Bhejo initiative? While we are sitting in the comforts of our houses spending time with our family, there are people out there who are devising plans and strategies to allow others to live in the comforts of their home too. Sonu Sood is one such messiah. Helping more than a thousand migrant workers, who didn’t have food or water or proper shelter, Sood made it possible for them to go back home by arranging transport and providing food and water during the journey. Another example is that of Ajay Devgan who paid for Oxygen cylinders and ventilators at new Dharavi Quarantine Facility.
Situations can vary. It is not only Covid-19 that can affect us. In a recent tragedy at the Kozhikode airport, Kerala, an Air India plane skidded off the runway and broke into two pieces. In this crash, the pilot and the co-pilot lost their lives along with 18 other passengers. What is important to note here is the quick thinking and decision-making ability of late Captain Deepak Sathe, the pilot, who decided to let nature’s wrath befall him, thereby saving the lives of many others.
This selfless act doesn’t get much attention in the media and people, too, forget the sacrifices so quickly. It is disheartening how we take such messiahs for granted and when it is our turn to take a step forward and reach out to the ones in need, we miss the opportunity because we spend so much time thinking about it.
On a daily basis, we hear about soldiers fighting battles that are uncalled for. While the citizens remain within the safe boundaries of their homes, the soldiers die fighting and safeguarding the borders. This selfless act doesn’t get much attention in the media and people, too, forget the sacrifices so quickly. It is disheartening how we take such messiahs for granted and when it is our turn to take a step forward and reach out to the ones in need, we miss the opportunity because we spend so much time thinking about it. As ironic as it might sound, this is the reality of mankind. Our capital vices precede our ethics. Caught in the whirlpool of self-made problems, we often forget that no one ever becomes poor by giving (Anne Frank).
