The Forgotten Melodies…

An evocative poem by Sarala about the curse of dementia, exclusively for Different Truths.

He sits alone on a chair

Looking lost in his own world

He does not know his mind well

A confused mind for years

Covered with grey and dark clouds

He has forgotten how to smile

Only a blank look on his face

Forgets everything he says or does

Confusion surrounds his cloudy mind

Difficult to handle his moods

Swinging left to right

And right to left like a pendulum

Children he once loved

Hesitate to go near him

As they find him a lost man

Without his jolly ways once they loved!

He had many friends and

Loved to dress and go out

With his batch of friends

Who have left him to his destiny

He wears same old clothes

He has no need or desire

Except when hunger strikes his stomach

No need of special dishes

Happy with roti and dal

Often he takes out the

Old snaps of his wife and children

With no emotion on his face!

He keeps holding his wife’s hands

At night an insecure feeling

Envelops him at night

Her mind travels to the gone past years

And sheds a tear wiping it fast

Lest he may feel upset

She treats him with love n care

As she knows his plight in life

Fighting with DEMENTIA, the DEMON!

She weeps in her heart but

Smiles at him with love

She is his best friend in life!
