Death of a Doctor

Bushra pens a poem, as a tribute to a Covid-19 warrior, the unfortunate demise of Dr Simon Hercules, in Chennai, April 2020, exclusively for Different Truths.

Briefings,
in the secretariat
Soldiers,
alert
Battlefield,
of danger
Heartache,
in the hot zone
An enemy,
unseen
Death,
of a warrior.
Denied rest
Ambulance,
stopped
Glass,
smashed
Barriers,
broken
Stones,
flung
Desperation…!
Finally
mud,
dug with shovel
clawed by hand
Mud,
sprayed upon
Body – plastic wrapped
flung,
8 feet under
instead of 12
Sprayed upon
Flesh,
recoils in death
layered with mud,
sprayed upon again
Soul,
restless
layered with mud,
sprayed upon again
Loved ones
look on helplessly
Yes,
hurts,
too much
When death is denied dignity!
