Death: A Journey to Eternity!

An evocative elegy by Rekha, as she remembered her mother-in-law’s demise, almost two years back. A poem with which many identify, exclusively for Different Truths.

As I lay in state, on the hard pile of logs,
Afraid thinking how would I welcome the heat,
Surging all around me, penetrating through,
Every cell, every fiber of my body.

This, the eternal truth of life, well lived or not,
Resigned to fate, we all in this final lap,
Of life’s marathon, a standstill, a long pause,
After all the commas, colons, and question marks!

Embraced by the Almighty, we merge into nothingness,
As we embark on our yet another journey,
From the mortal to the immortal, it is cathartic.
Is this what we call, heaven?

Bowing to nature’s commandment,
We are carried into a world so different,
Life, like the beginning, death, the destination,
And being is the journey.
With memories of the past,
Joys and woes of the present,
And hopes and dreams of the future,
We perform different roles in life,

A concoction so deadly, yet intoxicating,
Ever captivating and magical,
Death, like life is inevitable,
Like ever changing hues of the skies,

Never erased, but etched in my mind,
Satisfied and content,
As death stood above me,
Whispering sweet nothings.

Feeling as cold as winter in my body,
But flowers of spring in my heart,
Leaving behind our loved ones,
To live in their hearts forever!

We find ourselves as we get lost,
We hold on tight as we let go,
The hunger to be in this world,
The thirst to accomplish and conquer.
Life after death or death after life,
Always the burning question,
In life, we become arrogant,
And in death, humble.

Life is real, death so surreal.
Like the fragrance and colour of a flower,
One merges into the other,
and as mortals, we are enslaved.

To be born, to die, universal and timeless,
The journey, one’s choice and decision,
He is the Creator, He the Vanquisher,
Bow to the Almighty, for this cycle of life.
