Speed bumps

Soumya talks about the many speed bumps of life’s journey, in this poem, tongue-in-cheek, exclusively for Different Truths.

I was cruising along life’s fast lane
Whizzing by in Speed
When came a series of speed bumps
Which slowed me down indeed
First were the teenage crushes
The pleasure and the pain
Then came the board exams
Which were a terrible drain
Then the college admissions
Oh what a stressful time
Then discovering myself
Feeling quite divine
Then the loves and heartbreaks
That was quite a stress
Then getting the degree
Oh that was a mess
Now to find a living
A job to pay your bills
Learning to be an adult
Learning new life skills
Then finding your soul mate
And getting her to say yes
And then getting married
Man that is intense
Next comes kids and bingo
Lives are totally changed
Then comes their new problems
Getting you deranged
Finally they leave home
Leaving an empty nest
Suddenly there’s a vacuum
This is the real test
For running in the rat race
Trying to keep up speed
You’ve lost all your dreams
Forgotten what you need
Finally you retire
Time to stop and think
Life just sped away too fast
Over in a wink
And were you really up to speed?
What did it all mean?
But if you’ve enjoyed the journey
A wonderful trip its been
