Of Values and Desires

An evocative poem, by Suchismita, about poverty, values, and desires, exclusively for Different Truths.

Poverty invokes the darkness of night,
And my baba’s face loses the glimmering light.
This road, cramming with the crowd
And every mind emanates the desires of possession.

Even the yellowest popcorns seem a far-fetched dream
As the creases in baba’s forehead etch hollow scream.
A scream of pain, inability, and thousands of odds,
And an agonising heart sinks defeated against its fate.

The lustre of this world is now broken before my eyes,
And my tiny mind silently weeps witnessing the vice.
He has squeezed all of him; his blood, sweat and tears,
In the path where smithereens of tattered wishes lie.

Situation smothers the genuineness, tearing apart my soul.
Baba’s heart is shattered but he is still fixed in his goal.
What if the world again rekindles the door of mankind?
And stops selling its value for the cost of a popcorn?
