Make Sunshine for the Hay

A poignant poem about nature, pandemic, and hope, by Kavita Ezekiel, exclusively for Different Truths.

Woke up wondering what I would write today
What kind of meaningful words would come my way?
Leaves outside my window like gold coins strewn on the path
Twittering sparrows and chattering magpies splashing in the birdbath
Fall has brought with it a season of a ‘yellow madness’ all around
Trees shedding their leaves silently without much sound
The earth is a boon given to animals and to man
Our duty to grace it with goodness while we can
Out in the backyard for some morning fresh air
Felt a few gentle drops of rain on my jacket and hair
I know we are in the midst of a pandemic, but all must persevere
Work hard to live every moment without too much fear
I know that time will move on, these days will not return
To panic is a waste, futile to allow that nagging churn
Just soldier on believing in the gift of another God-given day
And let words and thoughts of hope flow, make sunshine for the hay!
