Nilanjana retells the story of oracle about Lord Krishna birth and fear and anger of Kamsa, in the weekly column, exclusively in Different Truths.

As discussed in a post earlier, Jayah and Vijayah, the door-keepers of Lord Vishnu, were cursed by Brahma’s sons. Hence, they had to take birth in the world of mortals. Lord Vishnu had promised them that he would also be born around the same time. The first birth of Jayah and Vijayah was as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu. Their second birth was Ravana and Kumbakarna. Their third birth was as Kamsa and Sisupala. Their obsessive hatred towards the lord would keep reminding them of Lord Vishnu. Eventually, they would die in his hands. This way they will attain moksha (liberation).

Kamsa was very fond of his sister Devaki. Her marriage was arranged with Vasudeva. After the marriage celebrations were over, Kamsa decided that he himself would drive the chariot and escort his sister to her new home.

As the procession began to drive the newly-weds home, a voice from the heavens warned, “You fool! This woman whom you are escorting to her husband’s house will be the cause of your death. The eight child born to her will kill you.”

Kamsa was wild with fear and anger. He pulled his sister, Devaki, down and attempted to kill her with his sword. Her husband, Vasudeva, intervened. With a bit of quick thinking, he reasoned with Kamsa. He said that the Oracle did not say that Devaki is personally going to kill her brother. Since the son is destined to kill Kamsa, Vasudev will hand over his children to their maternal uncle. Kamsa thought that was a fair deal and let his sister go.
