Vihang A. Naik’s collection of English poems framed in Making a Poem is a book beyond love, hatred, anguish, feelings amalgamating emotions to fiction. Poetry is a lot more than just a piece of literature; it’s something beyond that. Not as in hip, but like an event, a place to be, but not like a location, but like somewhere within yourself. It gives you time, but not actual hours or minute’s, but a chance to be, like be yourself, and have a second thought.
The poems beautifully reverberate around several emotions, which we encounter in everyday life and reflecting on the way we react to it. Take any emotion — love for a woman or grief for a loved one, or what we are going through, fear and pain from a deadly illness. The book delivers that if you hold back on the emotions — if you don’t allow yourself to go all the way through them — you can never get to being detached, you’re too busy being afraid. You’re afraid of the pain, you’re afraid of the grief. You’re afraid of the vulnerability that loving entails. The poet crafted the solution to the above problem, narrating that by throwing yourself into these emotions, by allowing yourself to dive in, all the way, over your head even, you experience them fully and completely. You know what pain is. You know what love is. You know what grief is. And only then can you say, ‘All right. I have experienced that emotion. I recognise that emotion. Now, I need to detach from that emotion for a moment.’
On a personal level, I loved the poems titled, ‘A Matter of Life’, ‘A Reader’s Response’, and ‘In Rains’.
