My Piece of Cake

Rohini does some soul searching and asks why we as adults lose our innocence and caring for others. An exclusive for Different Truths.

If someone compliments us for our dress, or bag, or any other thing, how do we feel? We definitely feel very happy and the big smile never goes off from our face. We keep admiring that particular stuff and feel blessed to have it. But what happens if the same person who complimented, asks to share that stuff with her/him. Shall we ever share our favourite things with someone else? Remember, it could be anything, a costly watch, or some imported accessory.

My daughter is very fond of strawberries and food items with strawberry flavour.

My daughter is very fond of strawberries and food items with strawberry flavour. Be it a milkshake, or curd, or smoothie, or ice-cream, she just jumps when she gets it. But the sad part is that whenever she attends any birthday party, she always gets a chocolate cake. She comes back home in a sad mood because she doesn’t like chocolate flavour.

Fortunately, recently she went for a birthday party with me and to her surprise they had ordered a strawberry cake. My daughter was so happy that it was becoming impossible for her to wait for the cake to be cut. But she stood patiently, the cake was cut, and all the kids ran to have the biggest piece. My daughter waited for her turn impatiently with the plate in her hands and luckily could get almost the last piece. By the time she was about to take the first bite in her mouth, her best friend came and said: “Fifi, the cake is very tasty, can you give me a bite please?”

She took a bite and very innocently gave rest of the piece to her friend.

Fifi thought for a while and said, “Let me first take a bite.” She took a bite and very innocently gave rest of the piece to her friend.

Running she came to me and said, “Mama, did you eat the cake, it was so tasty. For the first time, I ate a strawberry cake at a birthday party.”

“But you just took a bite, why did you give the rest of the piece to your friend?” I asked her as I had seen the whole scene that had happened.

“Because sharing is caring, that is what you have told me, mama,” she replied politely.

The mom inside me was happy that her daughter was learning to share

I was silent for a moment and then said, “Yes that’s true dear, but you could have shared half. It’s your favourite.” The mom inside me was happy that her daughter was learning to share but the human inside me thought, “How could she share her favourite thing? Will she do that with the rest of her things also? Will she start giving all her toys if her friends ask from her?”

“You have done a good job dear, so here is your reward, you have this piece of cake,” and I gave her mine after all a mother can’t see her child hungry.

But I would never share my expensive bag with my sister or my bestie.

Yes, sharing is caring. But I would never share my expensive bag with my sister or my bestie. Would never allow my husband to touch my wardrobe. Where do these values go as we grow? But we should never forget to reward our kids when they do such great deeds.
