The Communist Party of India Kerala state executive has demanded a special package for the reconstruction of the state ravaged by unprecedented natural calamity in the month of August, 2018. The central government must amend the rules and norms for extending financial help to those victims who lost their houses and or land acquired with hard-earned money. CPI National Secretariat member Kanam Rajendran, who is also the Kerala state council secretary of the Party, revealed this while briefing the Media on the decisions of the meeting of the state executive held on August 28, in MN Smarakam here. The meeting, attended by all the party national leaders also, was presided over by A K Chandran.

The Party also conveyed hearty thanks to one and all who helped the flood-ravaged state and its people, who were hit by unprecedented torrential rains and floods, to overcome the horror-stricken days.
No doubt, the united efforts of the people of the state at the critical time of the crisis are commendable and also need special mention here, the Party noted. The Party hopes that the central government would come forward with all help that the state and its people deserve. Kanm Rajenderan also pointed out that the preliminary data on the damages caused had already been submitted to the central government and added that the detailed final figures on the exact losses would be submitted soon.
He pointed out that under the present guidelines of the central government, one who has lost his house totally in rural areas will get only Rs 95,000 and in the urban areas Rs 1,00,1000. On the contrary, the LDF state government has decided to give Rs 4 lakh to those who lost their houses and Rs 6 lakh to those who lost their land. The state incurred heavy losses due to landslips and landslides. Of the 412 landslides, Idukki alone witnessed 278 taking away 174 lives Kanam Rajendran said.
The state executive, said the state secretary, refused to buy the argument from interested quarters that the calamity was caused by release of water from the dams. Even in places where there are no dams, torrential rains caused floods which washed away human lives along with houses and other valuables. No doubt, the state and its people have to draw lessons from the present calamity. Kanam Rajendran appealed to one and all, especially to all mainstream political parties, at this critical hour to come forward to help rebuild the state, participating wholeheartedly in each and every relief and rehabilitation activity.
