It Will Not Die

A poem of hope, loss and despair, by Shernaz, exclusively for Different Truths.

from year to year
memories splatter
into a bleeding void
spreading tentacles
that recoil upon themselves…

what happened to
the inseparable playmates?
Helplessly I watched
friends turn to foes
between one inhalation
and exhalation

smoke
from torched friendships
still smarts my eyes
the glint of swords unsheathed
in a flash of madness
blinds me

I search. I find.
Smidgens of compassion
in the rubble, the ashes,
the caked blood and charred bones.
Hope turns to belief.
Humanity is not dead
Only in a temporary torpor
