of ballads and requiems

An evocative love poem, by Mehuli, exclusively for Different Truths.

at fourteen, haroun and hera; seasonal lovers
lay on a roof and watched sunsets turn into moonlight,
over chopin’s nocturne op.9 no.2 in e-flat minor,
and recited wordsworth’s ballads about love into the starry night.

a fortnight later: a shoe-box filled with used bus tickets,
hands held and swung; one whole, two halves,
stolen kisses beneath flickering street lights,
and a dying city claimed by young love.

but seasons change and hearts follow,
the passion lives on in abandoned dreams;
and the love that once was occasionally sighs
when the city performs its stirring requiems.
