Willful Blindness

An evocative poem, a social commentary, by Shernaz, exclusively for Different Truths.

ideology obscures —
the obvious, dangerous and absurd
disappear from our sight

with ingrained prejudice
we deliberately choose not to know
that which should be known;

with impunity
or subconsciously we edit out
what disturbs deep-seated beliefs

filtering out specifically
those little sandpaper truths
that abrade our puny, brittle egos

our day to day
seemingly insignificant decisions
stimulate ‘sightlessness’

and entrench us deeper
into tiny bordered worlds
embroidered with the ideals we affirm

futile arrogance
of fleeting wealth and power
makes us darkly narcissistic

ah! how much wonder we blot out
of the beautifully wide landscape
with those narrow-vision blinkers
