Soma’s painting, Water, emerges from her deep concern about this depleting natural resource. She opines about the water crises, exclusively for Different Truths.

Artists are sensitive by nature. My painting, Water, is just the depiction of this truth. Some metropolises in India, which includes Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Chennai, run the risk of zero ground level water by next year. Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat face severe water crisis in Summers. Maharashtra too has joined these two states.  The entire nation is in the brink of water starvation within next couple of years.

The situation is very grim.

As we say water is life and life cannot exist without water, it is our responsibility too to preserve it for the next generations. Nature has given us in abundance but we are the one who are polluting it in various possible ways. Sometimes in the name of religion or in the name of social issues, the Dalits and subalterns are excluded from collecting water from wells or other water bodies.

Furthermore, urbanisation and industrialisation has had its toll. Water bodies all over the world have started depleting, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

There is no easy answer to this water scarcity for human sustenance. It is often attributed to lack of government planning, increased population, increased corporate privatisation, industrial and human waste and corruption.

In fact, 60% of the water supplied by the Delhi Jal Board, comes from Yamuna. Around 34% from Ganga and rest is from underground, said Dinesh Rohaniya, Delhi Jal Board vice chairperson

Like in India, Delhi, the capital, faces severe water shortage. In fact, 60% of the water supplied by the Delhi Jal Board, comes from Yamuna. Around 34% from Ganga and rest is from underground, said Dinesh Rohaniya, Delhi Jal Board vice chairperson and Sangam Vihar MLA., on June 24, 2019.

Similarly, Bangalore has gone from being the city of lakes to the city of concrete and filth-frothed lakes that bursts into flames.

Pakistan could run dry by 2025 as its water shortage is reaching an alarming level. It could be a drought like situation in the near future

Pakistan could run dry by 2025 as its water shortage is reaching an alarming level. It could be a drought like situation in the near future according to PCRWR, which is affiliated with South Asian country’s Ministry of Science and Technology.

China is also facing water crisis, especially in the northern part of the country. It is characterised by insufficient local water resources as well as over population.

In Sri Lanka, the people suffered acute shortage of both drinking and irrigational water during the last two years.

Crisis leads to conflicts and these conflicts can lead to acrimony, possibly World War III.

As we know, for India and China the source of water is Brahmaputra, where Assam wants to concentrate more on agricultural water but China on hydroelectric projects. Similarly, India and Pakistan share Indus. India and Bangladesh share Ganga. Surprisingly, no one is making enough effort to preserve these water bodies, plantation of large number of trees are required along both the side of these water bodies to stop soil erosion, thus preventing water bodies to shrink.

Rain water preservation is another source of water, which we should think seriously to eradicate this water problem

Water crisis is in truth a serious concern. Both people and governments should take drastic steps to eradicate the problem. Ms Bhowmik portrayed perfectly through her painting.

This a much needed cause to fight for. Urbanization without planning is taking a toll. Most new apartments in Bangalore, for example, rely on water tankers. While organizations such as Art of Living and Usha Foundation are doing their bit to revive river basins, much is left to be done. As Durga Puja is on the brink now, the painting depicts the reality on the ground. Very timely and well written article.

A wonderful painting depicting the reality on the ground. Durga Puja is approaching and very soon the protima will be immersed in the common water bodies in hordes, thereby polluting what little is left of clean usable water. Urbanization is certainly taking its toll. In Bangalore most new apartments rely solely on water tankers that use ground water. The silver lining is that organizations such as Art of Living and Isha Foundation are doing their bit to organize masses to revive water basin. So, is Ms Soma Bhowmick through her writing and painting in her own way. Really appreciate the effort.
