Farheen tells us how technology is making air travel much easier these days. Read more in the weekly column, exclusively in Different Truths.

Air travel is one of the most convenient and preferred modes of travelling. But, when the travellers think about air travel, considering a lot of factors, they get jittery and stressful.

When the technology is siding with us, travellers need not worry. The best days for travellers are becoming a reality soon because the helpful innovating and existing technologies would be used extensively for providing the best user experience to the airline passengers.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is not a new technology and it has already been in use at the Hong Kong International Airport and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. But, what’s changing is the question. The answer is that this technology will be used across the major international airlines and their networks.

According to CBS News statistics, “In 2015, more than 23 million bags were mishandled worldwide.” This technology will help flyers real-time tracking of bags, with cell phone alerts and even a map to show a bag’s current location. New luggage tags have a small radio frequency identification, or RFID, chip which is scanned as a bag moves through the system and onto a plane. The red light means that bag does not belong on this flight.

Delta’s senior vice president, Bill Lentsch, said he thinks the new system puts the airline will on its way to the end of losing luggage. It has announced a $50 million investment in RFID at 344 stations globally to track the 120 million bags it manages.

As a traveller, it must be cumbersome to reach the airport to realise that you have arrived quite early or late and you aren’t aware how much time would each checkpoint take. The baton has been passed on to technology to analyze and predict queues at airports. Technologies and devices, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi sensors, cameras, and airport and airline systems analysis, all collaborate to examine queue times at bottlenecks throughout the airport. This Queue management technology is a treat for passengers. This technology is being used at these two airports Orlando International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Be happy the next time you see the shorter queues at the airports.

What next? An ePassport is also known as a biometric passport. It looks like a traditional passport book, but it has an electronic chip that is encoded with the same information found in the passport (surname, given name, date of birth and sex). It also has a digital picture of the bearer’s face. This electronic chip increases security, reduces the risk of fraud, provides greater protection against tampering.

The tamper aware technology is helping people to free themselves from the hassle of carrying their luggage to the airport. Yes, you’ve read it correctly. One of the companies, Airportr, picks up and delivers flyers’ bags at any London address, in a matter of hours.

If you want to cancel the request, a call will take care of the cancellation. You can fly like a bird, if you avail service from Airportr, without you having to carry the luggage. The luggage is protected well because any device or process that makes unauthorized access to the protected luggage is easily detected.

The flyers who found it difficult to travel can start making their plans. Technology is making easier for us to basically do anything and everything.

Don’t forget to wish, you never know when your wish can be granted by technology!
